All 19 hijackers were Muslim men from Arab countries.
The official FBI list, confirmed by later investigations, breaks down as:
- 15 from Saudi Arabia
- 2 from the United Arab Emirates
- 1 from Egypt (Mohamed Atta, who led the plot on the ground and flew American 11)
- 1 from Lebanon (Ziad Jarrah, who flew United 93)
Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are all Arab states. All 19 were affiliated with al-Qaeda and acted as part of a jihadist operation ordered by Osama bin Laden.
That describes the men who boarded the four planes. It does not describe every person involved in planning, financing, or supporting the plot. Al-Qaeda’s wider network included people from other countries and ethnicities. The 19 who carried out the hijackings themselves were all Arab Muslims.
