Human is not a synonym for rational. Don't confuse net worth with self-worth. Success has nothing to do with money and everything to do with how you feel about yourself. People can do whatever they think they can do. I've never met a successful pessimist. I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. The extra mile is never crowded. Americans underestimate the value of pure freedom. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. Hustle never has an off night. Don't fear giving up the good to go for the great.

Thour Shalt Not Steal

Theft comes in many forms.  I hate thieves.  I worked with legions of them in the investment business.  It is legally allowed.  The guy next to me putting 8 points in tax-free bonds (he's dead now), crossing stock in-house with "no commissions" of several points,  corporate bonds with 7 point mark-ups (he's dead too);  the grift and fraud are endless.   

The construction business is ideally suited for theft.  Theft of time, theft of materials, theft of tools, it is boundless what is ripped off from unsuspecting homeowners.

I am especially scared of unscrupulous painters and handymen who, under the color of SCRIPTURE, either on business cards, letterhead or trailers, apply a Bible verse to show the world how honest and caring they are.  

I run from people like that.  You should too.  FLEE is the better word.

I have had several instances in life, I'm only 71, where I have seen Scripture verses on business cards, trailers, and letterhead used as a front to pilfer.

Here is one I saw again today.  

I caught this guy stealing from me.   He was stealing material that I had bought for MY job and at completion he was loading it up in his trailer when I caught him.

Big Christian?  No, just a scum bag.  A bona fide thief. 

Moses only left us 10 Commandments.  This one is fairly clear.

   

QUESTION

I'm not that bright.   Went to West Point, accepted into 5 of the 6 law schools I applied to, made millions in the stock market, graduated college in 3 plus years with two majors, but still learning daily.

The best schooling I received was from dealing with successful people over the past 35 years, who asked me to help them preserve and grow their financial assets.

That said, don't you rise and shine every single day, feeling rather queasy about life in America?   Looking around the major cities, seeing the entitlement, the theft, the lack of parental skills, the lack of two-parent households, rampant drug use, and on and on and on it goes.

I made my career on the telephone.

Some salesmen were a lot more polished, but they definitely didn't do the numbers.   

However, no one outworked me when it came time to make cold calls.

Death on the Solstice

Last night's deadly tornado activity in North Dakota is hard to fathom.

The death, the destruction, maybe the single largest tornado to land in the state since they have been keeping records.    

For the small towns that were destroyed, the families of those killed, and the farmers and ranchers who were put out of business, it was devastating.

I can only pray. 

Today is the summer solstice.  The day that has the longest amount of sunlight and the shortest amount of darkness in the Northern Hemisphere.  From now until December, the amount of daylight will decrease daily. 

Today is a sad day at Pamelot.   We appreciate our wildlife and work hard to provide habitat for birds and wildlife to flourish.  Two years ago, we transitioned to different landscapes to maintain a mosaic of vegetation patches to support diverse species of birds and animals with various food and cover requirements for foraging, breeding, and escape from predators.  Yes, we have a lot of predators.

Coyotes are always here, and we hear their songs from den sites in early spring.  Bear are in the vicinity, as are fox, raccoons, opossums, snakes, hawks, owls, and they are easy to see if you look.  And don't forget cats.  Wild, tame, feral, house, they are all here doing what they do best.   

As a birder I know well the carnage inflicted on wild bird populations by cats.

Last night, we lost the second clutch of killdeer.   The first clutch had been wiped out a month ago by predators, and the parents decided to nest again in the general vicinity.  This nest happened to be smack in the middle of the road.  The birds sat for 25 days, and the first egg hatched yesterday morning.   There were 3 eggs, so we had one chick and two eggs when I checked on them at sundown last night.

This morning, in the solitude of early dawn, coffee in hand, I walked up the drive to check on the nest.  I heard nothing, I saw nothing.  There was nothing.  Gone.

Overnight, gone.  Eaten by a predator.  God provided a meal to a predator.

It's the cycle of life.

Stock Market or L.A. Lakers Ownership?

A mind-blowing statistic for those of you who think, long-term, the stock market is a risky place.  Many risk-averse humans, those who hate to lose money more than they love to win, and there are millions of them, are the real losers.

Jerry Buss bought the Los Angeles Lakers for $67,000,000 in 1979, the year I moved to San Diego.  

He just exited for 149 times his money at $10,000,000,000 in 2025.

Sounds like a lot, right? 

That is $3,000,000,000 less than he would have made by investing in an S&P 500 index fund over that time. 

I do know one thing and this is a certainty.   It would have been a hell of a lot more fun owning the Lakers and walking away with only $10 billion.

The size of the private jets, yachts, homes, and support staff would have been the same.

In some ways it seems just like yesterday.  Not much has changed except I am learning the game of golf.  I have much to learn!

The heat and humidity is intense. I heard my first cicada this morning so I know summer is here. I'm going to spend my Sunday hours writing this synopsis so you know what I'm thinking at mid-year. First, let’s review where we are and what we are up against. As you know by looking at your brokerage statements for May things are a bit unsettled to put it mildly. May was tough. Ugly. Real ugly. My 2012 investment thesis has been to expect a repeat of 2011. No great shakes. I am trying to stay defensive and keep a defensive posture. My posture in staying defensive is because I think we are up against stock market regulators, politicians, greedy bankers and half the nation looking for the “perfectly legitimate excuse”. Life, like the markets, sometimes doesn't make sense and for sure it isn't fair. I don't have an edge on Greek or Egyptian elections, the Spanish banking system, what the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Chinese government, the U.S. Federal Reserve or what the tough chick in Germany, Angela Merkel will do. I know we have a recession in Europe, a Chinese economy that is slowing, a trending rise in unemployment in America and we are running drone wars in Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen and, unfortunately, still fully engaged in Afghanistan. Oh, and nearly 48,000,000 Americans using and abusing food stamps. Tell me, did I miss anything?

I do know our great country needs job creation and a recovery in housing. To me, they are the big drivers of our economy. Corporate America seems to be holding its own, but they are NOT expanding jobs. Can you blame them? They are hoarding cash, which is paying nearly zero. Healthcare “reform” looms as a key focal point, and we should get some clarity this week as the Supreme Court decision is close. Our current healthcare system is ineffective, and that is where the debate should reside. The abuse and waste is obvious. If you watch television or scour the internet, you know that Europe has chaos, the banking system is running excessive leverage and risk, the budgets in virtually every western country are out of control and the amounts of government debt are only increasing. I accept all of that for what it is and I try to exploit the opportunities. Working hard and working smart is difficult in this environment. All that said, the stock market has not fallen off a cliff. Close, but the market is still in a very small, positive uptrend. That is for now. By Friday things could of course be much different.

My position has been one that has served me well. I am trying to keep perspective. To look at the big picture, to remain positive and optimistic about our country, our markets, and our way of life. I have tried to position portfolios to guard against the ravages of inflation and central bank printing presses running at the speed of light. And by the way, it’s an election year, so I'll leave it to you to decide whose version of the truth you want to believe. What I know is that politicians the world over are following their own self-interest. Their only real goal is to remain in power as long as possible. Some things haven't changed!

Here’s an issue I grapple with today. West Texas Intermediate crude oil is trading down hard and near two year lows. That’s good for us at the pump for sure. Stocks are still in a positive light. Just what is it that stocks believe about our future that the all-important energy markets do not? Is it deflation or inflation? Is the global slowdown in growth as reflected by the demand picture of crude a better reflection of reality than what our U.S. stock market is telling us? With $80 oil barrels demand has got to be slowing or are the Saudi’s grasping for their last meal? And remember, the Bakken shale is not a global oil supply game changer. The oil boom has been one of the bright spots in this economy and at $80 oil that doesn't work. Oil shale, oil sands, deepwater rigs, they are all expensive. Projects will slow or be canceled at lower oil prices. Oil field workers may have to join the food stamp nation!

I don't have a lot of insight as to where this market will be by the end of the year. Nobody pays me to rub a crystal ball. They pay me to do two things. They pay me to preserve their money and make it grow. I think prudent money management is owning exposure to commodities whether it be gold, gold mining shares, coal, silver or crude oil. There’s no sugar coating it. I don't believe politicians and central planners (Bernanke and Geithner) who continue to downplay, obfuscate and flat out lie about the current economic reality. My effort in trying to decipher appropriate diversification parameters amongst various asset classes remains the same. I don't take breaks in the seriousness of the job you entrust me to do for you. There is no golf or fishing trips to distract me. I still work a lot. I love my job. I work for the best people in the world. And yes, the mistakes made rest solely upon my shoulders. I still make mistakes. My biggest mistake year to date has been holding Peabody Energy shares. Maybe you own some. Peabody Energy is the largest private-sector coal company in the world. President Obama has basically declared war on American coal companies. The company fuels approximately 10% of the electricity generated in the United States and 2% of the electricity generated throughout the world. They aren't going out of business any time soon. In time we will know if I made another mistake.

Had to go to my M.D. the other day.    He is a good person.   To see a physical therapist I needed a Dr. visit.   Truly highway robbery if you think about it. 

I do my best to stay away from "healthcare".

Health is my responsibility.  Not some pill bottle, not some surgical suite, not some physical therapy, not some needless teeth cleaning, not some Dentist or nurse or Doctor bullshitting America. 

Health, good health, takes some work.  

Pulse was 69.

Oxygen was 96%.

Blood pressure was 122 over 78.

I don't take any pills prescribed by the "healthcare" system.  I have been asked to take this, take that, take all the nonsense they try to jam into a body, week after week, for life.

Just eat good food.  Exercise, sleep well, use it or lose it.  Too easy, isn't it?

I don't believe there have ever been 2 identical days for this river to behave in its entire existence.  

The southern boundary of the Ghost Ranch is the shoreline (high water mark) of the Yellowstone.   Probably the finest smallmouth bass fishery in the entire world.

Upriver from the Ghost Ranch about 340 miles lies the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone where the river gets it start.

Know what? I have worked 55 years of my 70 on this planet. I am a bit tired. You want a good life? Work for it. Strap it on. Forget your skin color. Grow a pair and shut up and work your ass off. Think it is better elsewhere? Then move. Or shut the fuck up.

People who are brought up to believe that work is for suckers and that they are entitled to food and shelter will never move up. This culture of dependence will stunt a child's work ethic for life.

And speaking of children, one quarter of children on Pine Ridge are born with fetal alcohol syndrome, meaning with some degree of brain damage. Stop the cycle. Stop the poverty, the addictions, the suffocating absence of opportunity, and the loss of human capital.

Try this Pine Ridge. How about a communal alcohol-free house for pregnant women and young mothers, with classes?

Get a skill and get your child off to a good start.

Close down the Bureau of Indian Affairs. End the reservation system - it's never brought joy or prosperity to anyone. If Native Americans have to depend on government money for survival, how much dignity and self-respect do they have?

I graduated from a University where today, 27% of the students are of Native American lineage.

I know how business is done in Indian Country therefore I know Indian TIME! I have heard it and seen it all. The kickbacks that tribal leaders wanted, the corruption, fraud and waste at the expense of tribal members who don’t have a clue about the financial dealings of their own tribes let alone the 560 plus other tribes that are not subject to government oversight.

I know people don't want to talk about the real issues in the Native American population.

Fatherhood is the single greatest role a man could play in society. It's an absolute catastrophe that two-thirds to three-quarters of Native children are being raised in a home without a father present, in terms of the social cohesion of the community. People don't want to say that. Fatherhood is the single greatest role a man could play in society.

Today, the big reservation wars are internal -- rape, elder and child abuse, gang violence, alcoholism, obesity, opioids, lack of parental oversight, and vilification of those who understand that the top problem of "Native America" is the lack of in-home fathers.

The permanent victimhood class and the welfare state have created generational welfare, "project housing" to warehouse generations of people who have been told for 50 years that they are powerless and have no hope of ever succeeding on their own. Their family structure has been decimated. Their education has been dumbed down so bad that grammar, spelling, and financial literacy are foreign to them.

The race card has been sold as a substitute for ambition and success. Social programs have been sold as a replacement for a job and education. Government money has been sold as a replacement for a father, and in some cases, the entire family.

Remember I said this. The only person who can make a substantial difference in my life is the person I see in the mirror every day. My decisions affect my outcomes. 

I refuse to beg for some scraps with the illusion that something of significance is being done.

To pay people not to work, incentivize fatherless parenthood, and diminish the importance of the family, and guess what happens? Granted, it happens to the most gullible and least educated first, but it's front and center. Millions of Americans don't have a plan A much less a plan B. Pay check to pay check and zero savings. That doesn't stop them from having cable, $200.00 sneakers, the newest cell phones and the free shit army rolls on!

What are the ties that bind Natives to the reservations? Love of that plot of land they were displaced to? Racial allegiances/prejudices/bigotry? Distrust of those not like themselves? Shared misery? Handouts? Rejection of curiosity, adventure, exploration, or socialization?

If only Robert Gipp from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation were still alive and in politics. For sure, Mr. Gipp was one of the greatest teachers at Oglala Community High School in Pine Ridge, SD.

Robert Gipp always said, more government is the problem, not the solution.

Like you I need sleep.   Older I get, the less I need.

My day starts early.  It's invariably dark when I awaken.  Birds are still quiet.

I scan the news/markets like anyone else who may have a substantial position in the global markets.   From there, the Keurig is started.

From there I head to my outdoor spa, which is located close to a plethora of bird feeders.  Birds have been a part of my life for a long time.   My LIFE LIST across six continents is rather impressive.  So, coffee, spa, birds, shower, office.   Being retired, i still love getting after it.  Why quit when you love the game?   Not many people get to spend part of their day trying to figure out who you can help with your daily "bread"!   I am humbled and grateful for what the markets have provided. 

So, with the coffee, I do one cup.  One.   There was a time in my life when large mugs of nasty coffee were part and parcel of my trading day.   It was so bad that in the La Jolla office of Drexel Burnham Lambert, the office manager actually charged employees for daily coffee.   This particular manager was extremely "tight" and ran a tight ship because his bonus depended on net profitability.   I had never heard of a brokerage office on the West Coast that started life very early and charged employees for subpar coffee!   I lived it!   

Coffee is the most abused drug on the planet I would think.   I was guilty.

Today, just one.   Black, unsweet, hot, and quiet.

What CEO in North America would NOT have tried to beat the tariffs?

The media's hype on how great the economy is rolling is not honest.

Honest media (liberal media) is non-existent.  They are all compromised.

The numbers coming in are front-loaded.  GDP has been ramping ahead of the tariffs.   Why wouldn't it?   The fakery is all too obvious.

The media says the bears and doomers don't get it.   The media tells us the FED (always compromised, ladies and gentlemen, always) doesn't call for a recession anytime soon.   The nut jobs down in Atlanta are calling for a massive 4.6% GDP number in Q2. 

Bears and doomers won't believe it, but apparently, the Fed doesn't see a recession anytime soon. - Atlanta Fed forecasts huge 4.6% GDP in Q2 - inflation has cooled every month this year - retail sales still trending higher - labor market still robust.

These numbers are cooked better than Nancy Pelosi's stock trading account!

By the way, what brokerage firm handles all of this Congressional stock trading?  Who is the custodian of these Congressional frontrunners and thieves?

It's never easy.

Defending profits is key.

CNBC, Joe Kernan and AG1

Today was epic.   Andrew Ross Sorkin buying into the hype and bullshit of an AG1 supplement with Joe Kernan laughing his ass off was so great.

It's Friday on the CNBC set, no Ms. Quick, and that kook CEO of AG1 was tragic!  

What an epic farce.   I am upset with Costco for even considering this product for sale in their warehouses.  I own COST shares, and this was humiliating!

If that unintelligible gibberish and B.S. is what generates $600,000,000 in annual sales, then America is far more gullible than I thought.  

That CEO is a fraud, a shyster, and would sell her soul for a dime of dishonesty. 

Any chemists out there who want to tell the world what exactly is in that AG1 product besides grass and vitamins?  

 

BITCOIN, what do I know?

There is a large amount of hype surrounding this asset class.  More every single day.

I have only made money in Bitcoin so far.  Lucky me.

Watching CNBC mavens and reading about the Government of the United States getting involved scares me to death.   Besides winning a couple of wars, what have the USA politicians done for America besides rip off taxpayers like me?  These clowns can't even get DOGE to work for American taxpayers who pay the freight.   So many criminals are involved at all levels in this government theft.

Debt levels are unsustainable.

Interest on the debt is a trillion dollars a year.

It's the end of May.  I am lessening equity exposure and am going to liquidate my BITCOIN exposure.

Sooner than later.

What does Bitcoin have, you ask?  I respond with zero, nothing, zilch.

No book value, no net asset value, no discounted cash flows, no earnings, no intrinsic value. 

It reminds me of tulips.  At least tulips were real, and you were left with something when price and value converged near zero.

I'm finished.  I rode the wave and made money.  Wake me up when you think the time is hot to "invest, gamble, play" again in BITCOIN.  When it hits a $1,000,000 per BITCOIN there is no need to call, text or email.

Billy Mills

Billy Mills, national treasure.

In the spring of 1972 I was presented by Mr. Billy Mills with an award I will always treasure.    

The "Outstanding Native American Athlete Award"  was presented to me at Andes Central High School in Lake Andes, South Dakota.  Lake Andes is adjacent to the Yankton Sioux Indian Reservation, and I am extremely proud to say that I am sure that Mr. Mills also had a tremendous impact on the long-time Chairman of the Yankton Siouix Tribe who graduated with me in 1972, Mr. Robert "Bobby" Flying Hawk.

Mr. Mills was an orphan.  His mother died when he was eight years old, and his father passed away when he was twelve, leaving him to be raised by his older siblings and later attend the Haskell Institute, a boarding school for Native Americans in Kansas.  

Mr. Mills does not drink alcohol.

Yesterday WBD had a corporate announcement that might bring some attention to the name.  Time will tell; it's been dead money for a long time, and I own it by default.   It wasn't a name I purchased, only one I inherited with the buffoonery from the nitwits at ATT.   Does anyone know if the HBS case study on the demise of ATT has been published?   I think it is called, "How Texans eradicated a FORTUNE 10 company's value by billions and cut shareholders' dividend income".   A conservative estimate of ATT shareholder assets squandered specifically from the Time Warner merger ranges from $40 billion to $60 billion, with the higher end reflecting the difference between the acquisition cost and the spin-off value, plus associated market cap erosion. This week spent at home and forced to experience life mostly through a social media app has been sobering, chilling, disconcerting. What I'm seeing on this app is unsustainable. It can only end one way -- violent conflict. Not to pick on anyone in particular, but I watched Paul Pierce preach against family/marriage. I saw Joy Taylor brag about the joys of being a 304. These are the voices being elevated. You can't build a sustainable society that is hostile to the nuclear family. The unfathered are completely out of control. I'm rambling. I apologize.
